Stuðlagil canyon

Stuðlagil canyon is one of East Iceland’s most impressive hidden treasures, known for its jaw-dropping basalt canyon formations and turquoise-blue waters. Nestled in the Jökuldalur valley, this spot is a must if you’re after epic landscapes and photo ops.

Stuðlagi is an easy addition to your Ring Road itinerary – it’s just a 20-minute turn-off from Egilsstaðir.

Carved by the glacial river Jökla, this basalt rock canyon was submerged until 2009. This was when the Kárahnjúkar Dam project lowered the water level and exposed collections of basalt columns for the first time.

Now, you can get up close to see the classic columnar jointing structure. The east side of Stuðlagil canyon offers the best access if you want to hike down and stand right by the river.

Just keep in mind that the hiking trails can get rocky, so sturdy shoes are a good idea.

On the west side, you’ll find a well-marked parking lot and lookouts, perfect if you’re short on time or just want a quick stop for stunning views of the basalt cliffs. Once you arrive in Jökuldalur valley, just turn left at the signs to Stuðlagil.

For the best experience, visit in summer, when the blue-green waters are most vibrant and trails are clear and accessible.
